Oelwein has annual events that will provide fun for the entire family.  Many attractions can be added to your trip when visiting Oelwein or enjoyed throughout the year for our residents.  Check out what Oelwein has to offer your family!


Italian Heritage Days

Held annually at Red Gate Park. The event will be held on Saturday, August 20, 2016.


Heritage Days

Annually held 3rd Weekend in August. 

A great chance to get in touch with local heritage and celebrate our past. Railroad History - Large Flea Market - 5K Race - Vintage Cars - Arts & Crafts - Street Dance - Musical Entertainment - Games - Window Displays - Sidewalk Sales - Lunch Stands. Out-of-town guests can make Oelwein their weekend destination and area residents can renew their local heritage. Fun for the entire family!

Farmers Market

Friday Night Downtown Park'n

Third Friday each month in summer - sponsored by Oelwein Odd Rods Club. Car enthusiasts welcome to park 6:00-10:00 p.m. and enjoy sharing their enthusiasm for vintage cars. Complete with hot rods, door prizes, DJs. No charge for car owners or spectators. (Quote: " is different each time. Celebration Oelwein

The committee provides an event intended to celebrate our community by providing a fun, family-activity based celebration. Past activities included in the celebration have been a 5K walk/run, parade, entertainment, contests, kids games, inflatables, face painting, food & product vendors, bean bag tournament, duck races, car show, local talents, grand fireworks and much more! The morning events are held throughout the city of Oelwein and the afternoon events are typically held at the Oelwein City Park on South Frederick the 1st Saturday of June. Daddy Daughter Dance

Held annually the first Saturday in May in the Oelwein Community Plaza. All girls between preschool and 5th grade are invited to attend with their dad, grandpa, uncle, etc. A grand march has been added to the event and held in the Oelwein Mealsite in the North end of the Oelwein Plaza to allow mom, grandma and others to watch as the girls and their escort walk to the stage and get presented to the audience.

Party in the Park Summer Series

Held the 2nd Thursday of June, July, August and September in Plaza Park on West Charles 5-8 pm. Live local entertainment, food vendors, door prize drawings, kids activities and games. Beverage garden available. Free admission. Limited picnic table seating available. Bring a lawn chair and stay all evening.

Olde Tyme Christmas

Held annually the first Friday evening and Saturday of December. Event will be held on Dec. 1, 2017. Santa arrives in Oelwein! Activities include pictures with Santa, strolling carolers, Steil's Studio dancers, Festival of Trees, Festival of Wreaths silent auction, Grinch contest, carriage rides, Business window contest, a holiday market and craft show at the Plaza, Life-size Candy Land Game, Mr. Nick Balloons, Kid's Tattoos, Lighted Parade and more! Something new added each year! Stores will be open for holiday shoppers! Mark it on your calendar to attend each year!

Lovelights Lighting Ceremony

First Sunday in December - December 3, 2017 - at Mercy Hospital. Sponsored by Mercy Hospital Auxiliary.


Oelwein City Park and Campground. City Park offers boating, fishing, trails, playground equipment, and picnic area. Modern site (electricity, water and AC) is $12 per day or $70 per week. Oelwein Aquatic Center

Open 1:00-4:00 every Sunday June to September, or anytime by appointment.


The Oelwein Public Library offers public internet computers, a genealogy section with microfilm reader printer, a children's room, a reading room with current and archived newspapers and magazines, reference service, and over 45,000 books and materials. Click for library website.

Oelwein Chamber

Oelwein was named "Hub City" because of the rail lines coming into town and the repair shops located there.
